The Springbok Radio Crime Collection
  
 On 1 May 1950, the first commercial radio station in South Africa, 
Springbok Radio took to the airwaves broadcasting in both English and Afrikaans. 
This followed almost 5 years of intense investigation by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) 
and after consultations with both Lord Reith of the BBC and the South African Government it was decided 
to introduce commercial radio in South Africa to supplement the SABC's existing public service 
English and Afrikaans networks. 

Just imagine the BBC in Johannesburg.

And soon was born  "33 Half Moon Street" - This story centered around the private investigations company of 
“Assignments Unlimited”,
an organisation that investigated uncommon cases and who guaranteed successes at all time. 
The main character was Aubrey Mason, chief investigator played by Michael Todd.


...and "Squad Cars"  (1969-1985) - 
"... they prowl the empty streets at night ..."

Probably one of the most popular radio programmes ever broadcast in South Africa. 
Week by week a dramatised story of the South African Police at work would unfold. 
The series originally went out for broadcast on Sunday evenings. 
After 6 months the programme moved to it's familiar Friday night 7H30pm slot 
on Springbok Radio, where it remained until 1979. Because of the popularity 
of the Friday night western series' on South African television 
at the same time slot as "Squad Cars", the series moved to 8H30pm 
and remained there until the end of June 1985 when the series came to an end.
