Starfarers

When evidence of an advanced civilization is discovered by 
SETI astronomers, an expedition into the far reaches of the 
galaxy is planned and an eclectic team of scientists is chosen 
to make the trip. But because the origin of the alien signals is 
thousands of light-years away, the crew will age only a few years 
while millennia pass on Earth. And though they are ready to face 
the ramifications of such a voyage, none of the starfarers are 
prepared for what awaits them at the outer edge of the cosmos--or back at the planet they once called home.

Ten scientists are sent on a mission to the far reaches of space, searching for signs of intelligent life. Traveling at nearly 
the speed of light, their trip will take ten thousand Earth years; but to them, only five or six years will pass. At their 
destination, they encounter the Tahir, a totally alien civilization who used to journey to the stars but have since stopped. 
Gradually, the scientists establish rudimentary communication and discover startling news: a nearby Black Hole has 
quantum life. The Holonts, the intelligence from within the Black Hole, have known of the scientists' coming and are eager 
to impart the stunning news that death is not the end, that something lives on afterward. Thrilled to be the ones to impart 
this news to the rest of humanity, the scientists return to Earth, only to discover that mankind has gradually turned away 
from starfaring, as all other civilizations seem to do eventually. There may be no one who cares to listen to the 
astounding scientific and philosophical discoveries they bring back with them.
